Is it true that kids lose all of the learning they gained over the summer?
I haven’t found this to be true with my own children. We do take a break in the summer from homeschooling—a big break. We fill it with PLAY, fun, and joy. We’ve started a Summer Fun List. Everyone in the family adds to it, and we decide on the bigger family activities together. Everyone gets a say. I did this as a kid in my own family. Sometimes it was difficult, with three kids, to find something everyone wanted to do—but all of our voices were heard, and we learned to compromise and come up with creative ways to meet everyone’s summer fun desires.
If your kids are asking for more academic work, or you’ve found that continuing a homeschool schedule works for you, then go with it! You should do what works for your family.
We read every day during the summer—either audiobooks, graphic novels, or both. We also enjoy doing the reading challenges at our local library.
