Small but Mighty

Small and mighty: I started Knowledge Seekers to meet the needs of my kids. I am delighted to say that I have met that goal. Today we have 7 kids at KS, and we will be accepting only one more kiddo. Intentionally keeping the program small has many benefits for me—the founder, the teacher, the students, and the parents. I was not born to manage spreadsheets and social media. Creating this school has been my pleasure in bringing something beautiful and meaningful to my family and the wider community. That said, it has also been one of the most emotionally taxing things I have tackled. When we put our heart into something, we want it to succeed, and when things go sideways (or not quite as planned) it can be hard, to say the least.

Now that we have 7 kids, I am not constantly worried about how to grow the school and cover costs. I can breathe and enjoy more slowly what we have created. If the school was much bigger, I would constantly be overwhelmed with the admin of running and growing the school. The teacher, our wonderful Julia, is able to meet the needs of all of our unique students in a meaningful way. She has the time to hear what they are and are not saying. The students are able to build strong connections and concentrate on projects that bring them joy. Parents can rest assured that their kids are not slipping through the cracks and are seen for their strengths and gifts.

My Mum often told me as a kid that “Great things come in small packages.” KS is small and mighty.

Educational Consulting: Sara Gurath, Some of my offerings include:

  • subject-specific tutoring (K-10, all subjects)
  • specialization in teaching dyslexic struggling readers (I use Barton Reading and Spelling System, an Orton-Gillingham influenced curriculum.)
  • curriculum development and support
  • educational coaching (“classroom” management, instructional)
  • “power hour”–a 45 minute conversation and an email followup with recommendations

It is a gift to provide safety and connection for students, creating the space for them to learn with enthusiasm and confidence. Each of these humans is beautiful and unique.  I love to get to know each person and validate who they are, as well as being sensitive to their emotional and social development.  And I love working with neurodivergent learners!
