Volunteering: You and Families

Family & Youth Volunteer Opportunities

Note: We are now enrolling for 26/27 school year.

My most resent volunteering venture was with a group that helps mothers in needs organize and clean their house. It is Mamas helping Mamas and I love that so much.

I hope that my passion for helping and supporting others is something my kids take with them into adulthood.

Here is a list of places to help get your kids and family involved in volunteering.

🧹 Adopt One Block

  • A Portland-based nonprofit that lets you “adopt” one or two city blocks to care for by picking up litter on your own schedule. They send free cleanup supplies (like gloves, trash bags, trash grabbers, buckets, and even sharps containers when needed) right to your door once you sign up.
  • You choose when and how often you clean your block, and you stay connected to a community of other volunteers called Block Ambassadors. https://www.adoptoneblock.org/

🌍 SOLVE

Organizes community cleanups, restoration projects, and environmental stewardship events throughout Portland and across Oregon. Volunteers help remove litter, plant native trees, restore habitats, and care for parks and waterways. Many events are family-friendly and great for youth service hours. https://www.solve.org/volunteer

🐾 Oregon Humane Society

Youth (typically 16+) can apply for volunteer roles. Some opportunities are available for younger volunteers with a parent/guardian.

Educational Advocate: Theresa Jahangir is an educational advocate, educator, and school counselor who supports families navigating complex education and support systems. As the parent of a child with complex medical and developmental disabilities, she understands firsthand how overwhelming it can feel to advocate for a child in systems that were not designed with every family in mind.

Theresa works with families to identify meaningful accommodations and goals for their child’s IEP, 504 Plan, and other systems of support. She provides guidance at every step so families do not have to navigate these processes alone.

She specializes in helping families work through complex systems—including school districts, county services, and state programs—so children can attend school safely, thrive in their learning environments, and participate fully in their communities.

As a thank-you to newsletter readers, Theresa is offering a 1-hour consultation for $125 (regularly $175). info@theresajahangirparentadvocate.com Connect with Theresa to discuss how to support your child and create a plan that works for your family. Massage by Izzy: I hurt my back and Izzy really helped set me on the path to healing.
Hello, I’m Izzy. My goal as a massage therapist is your relaxation. Massage does not have to be painful to be impactful. Simply relaxing is undeniably rejuvenating. Rejuvenation occurs when you take time out to focus on your wellbeing. Many aches and pains and injuries can benefit from relaxation. I enjoy working with the nervous system to ease into tight muscles. By bringing breath and awareness to tight parts of the body we bring relaxation. While I do go deeper into your muscles, I also understand the impact of stillness and gentleness to allow your body to feel safe to relax. A massage is a great way to slow down and focus on your wellbeing, and get a chance to listen to what your body needs. Please join me if you are interested in slowing your life down a bit more. harger.isabel@gmail.com

Offer, first massage only $65 just email Izzy and mention Knowledge Seekers
