Here is the thing: if we strive for perfection and put all our weight into the end result, chances are we will be disappointed, and the journey might also suck.
I really want things to turn out MY WAY.
I have good ideas, and life should really just comply!
But basically it does not! Well, a lot of the time it doesn’t. I am trying — and often failing — to be flexible in the moment while also knowing my own limits.
Things that can really help in the homeschooling arena:
- Have an idea of what you want, not an actual plan.
- You can choose the subject of study, but ask your kids to pick the idea and details. For example, with essay writing, they choose the type and details (narrative about space).
- Add in whimsy and play. Make an art piece where you combine animals (rabbit & octopus), name it something fun. Use watercolor & add pastels (or crayons).
- Do school outside.
- Talk about how expectations and change can be teaching moments, not proof of failure.
- SLOW DOWN. Break it down. When kids are overwhelmed, they DO NOT LEARN.
What ideas have worked for you?
