Hello,
The stars are not quite aligned yet. Survey results and reflections for the Fall.
I have had some time to think, plans to fall through (including locations), and more time to think, including sleepless nights. It has truly been an emotional roller coaster.
As of right now, I do not have enough parents interested in being invested daily to create a full formal (2h–8h a week-ish, multiple ages) academic program. There were surprisingly very few parents willing to be daily leads. A program like this relies on parents wanting and committing to helping to educate the community.
To keep myself mentally sane and be financially smart, I am going to start slow and have parents show commitment before doing something formal with a paid location. I am trying not to be everything for everyone, and it is proving harder than it seems. I have a great need and desire to build community for my own kids, myself, and others in the homeschooling community. I care deeply, and it takes emotional strength, lots of organization, and frankly, money to start a formal academic program.
The locations that I have had in mind take money and parent commitment. I am not in a financial position to float a program while interest grows.
*I do want to build community with others starting this Fall. Contact me if you have kids in 5th grade to 8th grade. We would love to learn with other families that have the space to host (my house is too small for indoor use when it gets cold and rainy). I will also be following up with another email.
The goal right now is to slowly build community, commitment, and encourage others to be doers! To help the community and individuals take ownership of their kid’s education in a community setting. I love that there are other doers (as you can see in the list below), and we always need many more.
Sooooooo, if you are truly wanting community and connection and you want to be a doer, I am asking you to step forward and help build what you want to see in your world (community).
This might look like:
- Starting your own group, big or small (I’d love to help you).
- Checking out one of my soon-to-be community offerings.
- Starting a park meetup.
- Going to one of the groups listed below.
- Piloting a small academic meetup at your house.
- Going to an established meetup and building community.
- Join my Portland (PDX only) group on FB for meetups (not in PDX, I can suggest a group).
https://www.facebook.com/share/g/1Cd8dMRFcg/ - Ask me to help you start your own group.
- Invite other homeschoolers to tea or coffee.
- Call me to demystify homeschooling for this fall.

Don’t worry, I’m not leaving you hanging. Here is a big list of co-ops, programs, and groups for you to explore. I also know of 10s and 10s of other resources, so if you are looking for a class or resource, hit me up with an email and I’ll do my best to help.
I will be sending additional emails to parents with kids in grades K–4th and 5th–12th that indicated interest in being leads on the survey and might be motivated to start building community for the fall.
